Web Design
I’m a freelance web designer and developer (plethoradesign.com) and have been at it since 1995, professionally since 2003, and 110% freelance since 2005.
My focus is on building sites that customers can easily edit themselves, as much as possible. To that end I typically use Joomla, a content management system that runs on PHP/MySQL.
Web Hosting Reviews
In the course of setting up numerous sites, I have dealt with many a web host. There are so many hosting companies out there that it can be hard to make a choice. On this page I will list ones I have deal with, both good and bad.
- SharkSpace – where this site is hosted. Affordable and flexible in terms of available packages. Very fast servers.
- InMotion Hosting – their shared hosting is very reliable and feature-packed, and the virtual private servers are quite affordable. Their packages offer plenty of room to grow. Their VPS packages allow you to host multiple sites on the same account. Their customer support is lightning fast and very responsive.
- SiteGround – a consistently top-rated Joomla hoster (see here and here) by Joomla web site owners and webmaster. They provide expert Joomla support, where other hosts are usually not able to provide such specific help.
- iPower – they only do shared hosting, which is cheaper. They are just wrapping up a major transition to a new hosting platform, and it is looking good. You won’t have as much room to grow here, but this is more than enough for many people. Not recommended if your site will require a database.
- WestHost – a solid and reliable host that offers its own kind of virtual private server instead of shared hosting, but at shared hosting prices. This means you can install applications, manage e-mail accounts, and dedicated FTP, manage various server settings, and so on – things that are for the most part not possible with shared hosting.

You may occasionally run into the need for an SSL certificate, for example for an e-commerce site. I have been very happy with RapidSSL so far.
